At the time of a death the services required to complete the disposition of the decedent’s remains
are provided on two levels. The funeral service provider will arrange for the transfer of the remains,
any legal documentation, the direction of a funeral or memorial service if requested and the transfer
of the remains to the Burial Park. The Burial Park will then perform the interment of the casket,
or the cremation of the deceased and inurnment of the ashes as directed by the client family.
Every family has different needs and it is important that you find the firm that can be entrusted
with your confidence. Like any major consumer decision you should take the time to compare firms by
visiting their facilities, talking to a funeral director and asking for a complete price list. As
with any other consumer purchase the adages of ‘buyer beware’ and ‘you get what you pay for’ can apply
to funeral homes.
Under the Cemetery and Funeral Services Act of B.C. you have specific rights as a consumer;
- Funeral Service Providers must post and make available upon request a complete, itemized price
list for services and products they offer.
- Funeral directors are licensed by the Province of B.C. and licenses must be posted in a public
area of the funeral home.
- At the time of a funeral arrangement the funeral director must provide you with an itemized copy
of the contract.
- Subject to some conditions the purchaser may cancel a contract for a prearranged services plan
at any time.
A memorial society is not a funeral home. For the price of membership in a memorial society the new
member is provided with a designation form to record their personal funeral anddisposition requests.
The completed designation form is kept on file with the society’s office and a copy is provided to
the contract funeral service provider. Many non-society funeral homes provide a similar designation
and filing service at no charge.
When a memorial society member dies, the estate, or the survivors will be responsible for the funeral,
cremation and cemetery expenses. Memorial societies negotiate reduced service fees for their members
with a local funeral service provider. Unless the member has a prepaid prearrangement the survivors
are responsible for memorial expenses at the society’s published contract rates. Some non-society
funeral homes will honour memorial society memberships at contract rates.

No matter which funeral provider a family chooses, Royal Oak Burial Park, as a non-sectarian public
cemetery, enjoys a professional relationship with all of the local funeral homes in our community.
